What is VITAMIN B2 and where does it come from?
VITAMIN B2 is one of the B complex vitamins used in the body to convert food into fuel (glucose), which is burned to produce energy. B vitamins also help the body metabolise fats and protein and are necessary for healthy skin, hair, eyes, organs and body systems.
What does VITAMIN B2 do?
Also known as riboflavin, VITAMIN B2 is a component of two enzymes: flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD). These enzymes are important in energy production, and are essential for normal fatty acid and amino acid synthesis. Because of their vital roles, cellular growth cannot take place in the absence of VITAMIN B2.
In addition to converting proteins into energy, VITAMIN B2 also works as an antioxidant by fighting harmful particles in the body known as free radicals. Free radicals can damage cells and DNA and may contribute to the ageing process, as well as the development of a number of health conditions. Antioxidants such as VITAMIN B2 can fight free radicals and may reduce or help prevent some of the damage they cause.
VITAMIN B2 is also needed to help the body change vitamin B6 and folate into forms it can use. It is also important for body growth and red blood cell production.
VITAMIN B2 is known to be especially helpful to reducing damage in the lens of the eye, which can lead to cloudy vision. VITAMIN B2 may help maintain healthy eyes and good vision.
