What is VITAMIN B-1 and where does it come from?
VITAMIN B-1, also called thiamine or thiamine, is one of the B complex vitamins. Thiamine is found in both plants and animals and plays a crucial role in certain metabolic reactions. Most foods contain small amounts of thiamine. Large amounts can be found in pork and organ meats. Other good dietary sources of thiamine include whole-grain or enriched cereals and rice, legumes, wheat germ, bran, brewer's yeast and blackstrap molasses.
What does VITAMIN B-1 do?
VITAMIN B-1 helps the body convert food, specifically carbohydrates into fuel (glucose), which is burned to produce energy. Necessary for optimal brain function, VITAMIN B-1 is considered an "anti-stress" vitamin because of its capacity to improve the body’s ability to adapt to mental and physical stressors.
VITAMIN B-1 is also a precursor to a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine involved in the communication between nerves. In this way, VITAMIN B-1 promotes proper nervous system and muscular function.
VITAMIN B-1 also helps to strengthen the immune system, and may help reduce digestive problems including poor appetite.
